Video - The Practice of Open Adoption
Overview
In this second video, The Spirit of Open Adoption, you will hear from birth parents, adoptive parents, adoptees and professionals as they talk about what open adoption looks like, and the benefits of openness for all members of the adoption triad.
You heard professionals talk about how mental health issues [of members of the adoption triad] are often based on a lack of information or misinformation, and that reality is something that people can deal with.
▶ How comfortable are you sharing difficult information with your patients/clients?
While open adoption can mean that the birth parents, child and adoptive parents maintain a relationship after the adoption is final, open adoption is not a co-parenting or shared parenting relationship. Those supporting expectant parents who are considering adoption need to make it clear what open adoption is, and what open adoption is not.
▶ What skills might you need to help support your patients/clients as they consider the possibility of open adoption?
