Julie Video
In this video dramatization, we meet 17-year-old Julie, who is visiting the local public health clinic. Julie has two toddlers, ages 2 ½ and 13 months and currently lives with her grandmother. She is four months pregnant and meets with Rita to discuss her options. After this meeting, Julie and Gary, the father of the baby, are seen discussing adoption. We then see Julie and Gary meeting with Rita at the health clinic a few days later. In the video, you will see examples of how Rita, the public health nurse uses these techniques as she engages Julie.
Consider these questions as you view the video:
▶ What are the ways in which Rita builds rapport with Julie?
▶ How does Rita use open-ended questions to let Julie tell her story?
Consider the demographics (specifically the age) of population that you work with.
▶ Do you work primarily with adults or are teens your primary patients/clients?
▶ In what ways is working with an older teen different than working with an adult patient/client?
▶ What where some of the things that you may need to consider as you engage older teens?
